The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

The Business Platinum Card from American Express is built for business owners who travel often, book premium trips, and can make real use of a long list of statement credits and travel perks. It works better as a high-end business travel card than as an everyday spending card, since most non-bonus purchases only earn 1x points.

Is The Business Platinum Card® from American Express worth it?

This card is great for...

Airport lounge access

Large business purchases

Amex Travel flight bookings

This card is worth it for business owners who will actually use the travel benefits, lounge access, and several recurring credits. If you book flights through Amex Travel, value Membership Rewards points, and regularly spend $5,000 or more in single transactions, the card offers a mix of premium travel comfort and targeted earning that can justify the $895 annual fee.

It is a weaker fit for businesses looking for simple, broad rewards on everyday expenses. Outside of flights, prepaid hotels through Amex Travel, and a handful of business categories, the earning rate is modest, so many small-business owners will not get enough ongoing value unless they are also using the benefits consistently. This is a card for heavy travelers and high-spend operators, not for every business owner with general expenses.

MaxRewards

MaxRewards Verdict

The Business Platinum makes the most sense for frequent business travelers who can use the lounges, travel protections, airline-related perks, and statement credits year after year. If your business spending is more routine than travel-heavy, the fee is hard to justify on rewards alone.

Rewards

Membership Rewards points are the main appeal here, but the earning structure is fairly specialized. This card does its best work on flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel, plus certain business purchases and large transactions, rather than on everyday operating spend across the board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. This means you can only earn the welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum once. If you've previously received the welcome bonus on this card, you're unlikely to be eligible again. This rule applies per card product. so holding the personal Amex Platinum would not affect your eligibility for the Business Platinum’s welcome offer, and vice versa.

The core benefits are similar. They both offer lounge access, 5x points on flights and prepaid hotels through Amex Travel, and a long list of statement credits. The key differences are in the credits themselves. The Business Platinum offers credits geared toward business expenses like Dell, Indeed, and wireless phone service, while the personal Platinum focuses on lifestyle credits like Uber Cash, Lululemon, and digital entertainment. The Business Platinum also earns 2x points on select business categories including shipping, software, hardware, and purchases of $5,000 or more.

Both are premium business travel cards with high annual fees, but they suit different businesses. The Amex Business Platinum has a broader lounge network with over 1,400 locations and business-focused credits for Dell, Indeed, and wireless. The Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business earns 3x on advertising spend with no cap — a major advantage for businesses with large marketing budgets — and offers a more flexible $300 travel credit. If lounge access and business tool credits are your priority, the Amex Business Platinum edges ahead. If you spend heavily on online advertising and travel, the Sapphire Reserve for Business may be the better fit.

You don't need a formal business entity to apply. Sole proprietors, freelancers, independent contractors, are all eligible. Even a side gig could give you eligibility, but you may need to show proof of income from it on your application for approval.
