Citi Rewards+® Student

The Citi Rewards+ Student is built for students who want a simple starter card with a little extra value on groceries and no annual fee. It works best as an everyday beginner card for light spending, not as a travel card or a long-term rewards powerhouse.

Is the Citi Rewards+® Student worth it?

This card is great for...

Campus and grocery purchases

No annual fee starter card

Small everyday spending

This card is worth a look for students who want an easy first rewards card and spend regularly at grocery stores. The no annual fee keeps the commitment low, and earning 2x ThankYou points on up to $6,000 in grocery purchases each year gives it a clear everyday use case for food shopping and basic household spending.

The tradeoffs are straightforward. Outside of groceries, the rewards rate is only 1x, the welcome offer is modest, and there are no meaningful benefits to help it stand out. The 5% foreign transaction fee also makes it a poor fit for studying abroad or any regular international use. For a student who mostly wants a simple card for domestic spending and credit building, it does the job well enough. For anyone looking for stronger rewards or travel flexibility, it will feel limited fairly quickly.

MaxRewards

MaxRewards Verdict

This is a solid fit for students who want a no annual fee card and do a decent share of their spending at grocery stores. Its main limitation is that nearly everything beyond that is fairly basic, so many cardholders will eventually outgrow it.

The rewards setup here is simple: elevated earnings at grocery stores, then 1x points everywhere else. Think of it as a starter card that gives one everyday category a boost rather than a card built to maximize spending across the board.
