USAA Military Affiliate American Express

The USAA Military Affiliate American Express is built for cardholders who want a simple no-annual-fee card with extra value at gas stations and grocery stores. Overview

Is the USAA Military Affiliate American Express worth it?

This card is great for...

Gas and grocery spending

No foreign transaction fees

Basic travel protections

Yes, for the right cardholder. If you want a straightforward no-annual-fee card and spend a meaningful share of your budget on gas and groceries, this card gives you solid day-to-day value without asking you to track rotating categories or pay an annual fee. The lack of foreign transaction fees also makes it more usable for travel or purchases abroad than many basic rewards cards.

Where it becomes less compelling is outside those two bonus categories. Earning 1% back everywhere else is serviceable, but not hard to beat. There is also no welcome bonus to boost first-year value. This card makes the most sense for someone who values simplicity, uses the gas and grocery categories regularly, and appreciates built-in travel and rental car coverage. If most of your spending falls outside those areas, a stronger flat-rate card will likely be a better fit.

MaxRewards

MaxRewards Verdict

A practical fit for cardholders who want no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and better-than-basic rewards on gas and groceries. Its main limitation is simple: once you move beyond those categories, the earning rate is only average.

Earning

Rewards

This card keeps rewards easy to follow. You earn USAA points worth about 1 cent each, with elevated returns on gas and groceries and a standard rate on everything else.
