AARP®

The AARP® Credit Card is built for someone who wants simple cash-back style rewards on two familiar everyday categories: dining and gas. It works best as a no-annual-fee spending card for regular errands and meals out, not as a travel card or a premium all-in-one option.

Overview

Is the AARP® worth it?

This card is great for...

Restaurant spending

Gas station purchases

No-fee everyday use

This card is worth a look if a big share of your monthly spending goes to restaurants and gas stations and you want a straightforward no-annual-fee card. Earning 3% in both categories is solid for a card that does not charge an annual fee, and the welcome bonus is easy to earn with just $500 in spending.

The tradeoff is that the card is fairly narrow. Outside of dining and gas, it only earns 1%, and there are no notable side benefits to help it stand out. The 3% foreign transaction fee also makes it a poor fit for international travel. For the right spender, this is a simple category card that can pull its weight, but most people will want to pair it with a stronger everyday card for everything else.

MaxRewards

MaxRewards Verdict

A good fit for cardholders who spend consistently on dining and gas and want uncomplicated rewards with no annual fee. Its main limitation is simple: once you leave those two categories, the card is pretty ordinary.

Rewards

The rewards setup here is easy to follow. You get elevated earnings on dining and gas, then a standard 1% back in points on everything else, so the card makes the most sense when those two categories are a regular part of your budget.
