Chase Freedom® Student

The Chase Freedom Student is built for students who want a first credit card from a major issuer and a simple path into the Chase ecosystem. It works best as a starter everyday card, not as a high-earning rewards card, with its value coming more from low cost, credit-building potential, and a few beginner-friendly perks than from its ongoing earn rate.

Overview

Is the Chase Freedom® Student worth it?

This card is great for...

First credit card use

Everyday campus spending

DoorDash and Lyft use

This card is worth a look if you're a student who wants a no-annual-fee card that is easy to understand and comes from an issuer many people hope to keep long term. The annual 2,000-point good-standing bonus for the first five years adds real value for a starter card, and the Chase travel and purchase protections are stronger than what you often see on entry-level products.

Where it falls short is rewards. Outside of Lyft, you are mostly earning 1x points, so this is not the card to maximize everyday spending once you have other options. It makes the most sense for students who care more about building credit, keeping costs low, and getting a few useful protections along the way. If your goal is pure cash back or stronger bonus categories, you'll likely outgrow it.

MaxRewards

MaxRewards Verdict

A solid first card for students who want to build credit with Chase and pick up a few useful protections without paying an annual fee. Its main limitation is simple: the ongoing rewards are modest, so many cardholders will eventually want a stronger everyday card.

Rewards

This card keeps rewards simple. You will earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points on every purchase, but the real story here is basic everyday earning plus a temporary boost on Lyft, not a category-heavy rewards setup.

Annual Credits & Perks

Benefits

The practical value here comes from a few recurring extras, especially the anniversary good-standing bonus and DoorDash savings if you already use the service. These benefits can add meaningful value on a no-annual-fee student card, but only if they match your habits.
