Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Built for travelers and diners who want strong everyday rewards without stepping up to a premium annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is at its strongest as a primary travel card for regular use. It blends solid bonus categories, flexible Chase Ultimate Rewards points, and meaningful travel protections in a way that works well both for frequent trip planners and for someone booking a few big trips a year.

Overview

Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card worth it?

This card is great for...

Dining and travel spending

Chase Travel hotel bookings

Trip protection coverage

Yes, for the right cardholder this is one of the clearest $95 annual fee cards to justify. You get valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points, elevated earnings in categories many households actually use, and travel protections that are stronger than what you usually see at this price. If you dine out often, book travel at least a few times a year, and can use the $100 annual Chase Travel hotel credit, the card is easy to keep long term.

It is a weaker fit if most of your spending falls outside its bonus categories or if you prefer simple cash back with no travel portal involved. The hotel credit requires booking through Chase Travel, and some of the estimated benefit value depends on using DoorDash-related offers. If you will not use those perks and do not care much about travel insurance, a lower-maintenance cash-back card may be a better match.

MaxRewards

MaxRewards Verdict

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card makes the most sense for someone who wants a flexible, travel-friendly rewards card with strong everyday categories and useful protections for a modest annual fee. Its main limitation is that some of its value depends on booking through Chase Travel and actually using the card's partner credits.

This card earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which are most compelling for cardholders who spend regularly on dining and travel and want more flexibility than standard cash back. The rewards rates are broad enough for everyday use, with the highest return reserved for travel booked through Chase Travel.

Benefits

Beyond points, the appeal here is practical travel value. The card pairs a few recurring credits with a strong set of trip and purchase protections, which can matter as much as the rewards rate if you travel regularly.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, which means you're unlikely to be approved if you've opened five or more credit cards across any issuer in the past 24 months. This is one of the most important eligibility factors to check before applying, since Chase typically declines applications automatically if you're over the limit regardless of your credit score or income.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is widely considered one of the best travel rewards cards on the market. It has a straightforward earning structure, a relatively reasonable $95 annual fee, and access to Chase's transfer partners — giving beginners a taste of premium travel rewards without the complexity or cost of a higher-tier card. If you're new to travel rewards and want a card that grows with you, the Sapphire Preferred is a strong first choice.

Yes. One of the Sapphire Preferred's biggest strengths is its ability to transfer points to over a dozen airline and hotel loyalty programs at a 1:1 ratio, meaning 1,000 Chase points can become 1,000 partner miles/points. Popular transfer partners include World of Hyatt, United MileagePlus, Southwest Rapid Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy. Transferring to travel partners is generally considered the best way to maximize point value.

The Sapphire Preferred and Reserve share the same transfer partners and point structure, but mainly differ in cost and perks. The Preferred has a $95 annual fee and is better suited for casual to moderate travelers, while the Reserve carries a higher annual fee but adds premium benefits like airport lounge access, a broader travel credit, and higher rewards rates suited for more frequent travelers.
