Slate®

The Slate® is built for someone who wants a simple no-annual-fee card and does not care about bonus categories. It works best as a basic everyday card for light spending, especially if you value a few shopping and DoorDash-related perks more than maximizing cash back.

Overview

Is the Slate® worth it?

This card is great for...

Basic everyday purchases

DoorDash orders

Purchase protection coverage

This card is worth considering if your main goal is keeping things simple with a $0 annual fee and a flat 1% back on everything. The appeal is less about rewards and more about having a straightforward card from Chase with a few useful protections, plus DashPass and a small quarterly DoorDash credit for non-restaurant orders.

For most readers focused on earning cash back, though, the Slate® is a hard card to recommend as a primary spender. A 1% return is easy to beat, even among no-annual-fee cards, and the 3% foreign transaction fee makes it a poor choice for international use. It fits best as a low-maintenance card for someone who values simplicity and may use the included perks, not as a card for maximizing everyday rewards.

MaxRewards

MaxRewards Verdict

The Slate® makes the most sense for someone who wants a no-fee Chase card with basic protections and modest DoorDash value. If rewards are your priority, its flat 1% earning rate leaves too much on the table.

Earning

Rewards

Rewards here are as simple as they come: 1% cash back on purchases, with no bonus categories to track. That makes the card easy to use, but it also means the return is modest compared with many other no-annual-fee cards.

Annual Credits & Perks

Benefits

The main practical value comes from DoorDash perks, not from ongoing statement credits across a wide range of merchants. If you already order through DoorDash, those benefits can add a little extra value to an otherwise basic card.
