United Gateway℠ Card

The United Gateway℠ Card is built for occasional United flyers who want to earn MileagePlus miles without paying an annual fee. It works best as a low-cost airline card for United trips and a few everyday categories, not as a primary card for all spending.

Overview

Is the United Gateway℠ Card worth it?

This card is great for...

United flight purchases

Gas and commuting spend

No-fee airline card

This card is worth it if you fly United from time to time, want to keep your rewards tied to MileagePlus, and do not want to commit to an annual fee. The strongest appeal is simple: you get better earnings on United purchases, gas, and local transit, no foreign transaction fee, and a few practical travel protections that are better than what many no-annual-fee cards offer.

The tradeoff is that most of the airline-specific extras are locked behind $10,000 in annual spending, including the checked bag benefit and cardmember award pricing. If you fly United often enough to chase those perks, a higher-tier United card may make more sense. If you want flexible travel rewards or stronger everyday earnings, a general travel card will usually be a better long-term fit.

MaxRewards

MaxRewards Verdict

A solid entry point into the United card lineup for travelers who want no annual fee and occasionally book with the airline. Its main limitation is that the more meaningful United perks require substantial spending, so frequent flyers may outgrow it quickly.

Rewards

The rewards setup is straightforward: this card earns MileagePlus miles, with the highest return on United flights and a modest boost on gas and local transit. In practice, it makes the most sense for United purchases first, then a handful of commuting expenses, while everyday non-bonus spending is less compelling.

Annual Credits & Perks

Benefits

The value here comes more from useful travel protections and a few United-related savings than from premium perks. Since there is no annual fee, the bar is lower, but it is still important to know which benefits you get automatically and which ones only kick in after significant yearly spending.
